Rwandan Hardwoods: A Guide to Local Wood Species
Explore the rich variety of Rwandan hardwoods used in premium furniture — from Umuvumu to Umunyinya, each with its own character and grain.
Rwanda sits at the heart of one of Africa's most biodiverse regions. The forests of Nyungwe, the Eastern Province, and the volcanic north are home to timber species that have been used by craftsmen for centuries.
Umuvumu is perhaps the most prized. Dense, dark, and with a grain that catches light in unexpected ways, it is the wood of choice for statement pieces — dining tables, bed frames, executive desks. It is also exceptionally durable, resistant to both moisture and insects.
Umunyinya offers a lighter palette. Its warm honey tones and fine grain make it ideal for bedroom furniture and decorative shelving. It takes stain beautifully, allowing craftsmen to achieve a wide range of finishes.
Umuko, the rarest of the three, is reserved for our most special commissions. Its deep red heartwood is unlike anything else found in the region. A piece made from Umuko is not just furniture — it is an heirloom.
At Atelier Gihanga, we source all our timber from sustainably managed forests. For every tree we use, two are planted. This is not just policy — it is a commitment to the land that has given us everything.
